Your embassy or consulate is your “home away from home” and serves as the main point of contact with your home country’s government while living in Hungary. Most foreign diplomatic missions are located in Budapest, particularly in the 6th, 12th, and 2nd districts, making them relatively easy to access for residents and visitors.
Document Services: Embassies and consulates can assist with
renewing passports, issuing emergency travel documents if your
passport is lost or stolen, and registering births or deaths abroad.
Notarial Services: Many missions provide document
legalization, such as Apostilles or witness signatures, to make
documents from your home country valid in Hungary, and vice versa.
Emergency Assistance: In cases of serious accidents,
hospitalization, or if you become a victim of a crime,
embassies can offer support, guidance, and help you navigate local procedures.
Legal & Medical Lists: Embassies can provide curated
lists of English-speaking lawyers, doctors, or translators
familiar with the needs of your home country, which can be extremely helpful in
urgent or complex situations.
Voting: Many diplomatic missions also assist citizens in
participating in national elections from abroad, ensuring you
can exercise your voting rights even while living in Hungary.
